2021 County Convention

The Transylvania County Democratic Party hosted a virtual convention this year via ZOOM with over 75 people in attendance. Guest speakers included NC Rep. John Ager and Brevard City Council members Maureen Copelof and Mac Morrow.

In Rep. Ager’s discussion of current policy at the state level, he mentioned that Democrats in Raleigh are advocating for our youth mental health care access, among many other issues.

County Democrats discussed three Resolutions written  in our county’s March precinct meetings.

First, a Resolution written by Brevard 1 in favor of Ranked Choice voting passed up to the District Convention. Following that vote, another from Brevard 1 Resolution regarding Closed Primaries was discussed but ultimately not passed. The recent uproar caused by the purchase and resulting for-profit status of Transylvania Regional Hospital led to the writing of the last resolution, which opposes prioritizing profits over quality of care.

After much discussion, this resolution passed.

A new slate of officers was passed as well, with Sam Edney elected to Chair. The rest of the elected slate is as follows: First Vice Chair, Julia Kennerly; Second Vice Chair, John Turner; Third Vice Chair, Sellers Shook; Secretary, Peggy Reed; and Treasurer, Richard Mills.
